What is Water Baptism?

Jesus established water baptism as part of His Great Commission (Matthew 28:19), instructing that new disciples be baptized in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. We believe this instruction was meant to be an ongoing practice within the church, and we encourage every believer to be baptized in water.

Baptism is for Believers

In the New Testament, baptism followed repentance and faith. On the Day of Pentecost, Peter urged the crowd: “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins” (Acts 2:38). About three thousand people responded, and “those who accepted his message were baptized” (Acts 2:41).

Here at Liberty Pentecostal Church, we continue this same pattern. We believe that those who have turned from sin and placed their faith in Jesus Christ for eternal life are encouraged to take this important step of obedience.

What Does Baptism Mean?

In the early church, baptisms often took place in public settings where family and friends could gather. This public act identified the believer as a follower of Christ. While baptisms today often occur inside church buildings for convenience, the public declaration remains an important part of its meaning. Through baptism, a person openly identifies Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.

The apostle Paul also taught that baptism symbolizes the believer’s union with Christ: “Don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life” (Romans 6:3–4).

Being immersed in water represents the end of the old life. Rising out of the water symbolizes the new life found in Christ. The believer who was once spiritually dead in sin has been made alive through the same power that raised Jesus from the grave. Water baptism is therefore an outward expression of an inward transformation.

How Should You Be Baptized?
The biblical word baptize means to immerse, dip, or submerge. In the New Testament accounts of baptism, individuals were fully immersed in water.

Jesus Himself was baptized by John in the Jordan River: “As soon as he was baptized, he went up out of the water” (Matthew 3:16). Likewise, Philip baptized the Ethiopian official by going down into the water with him and coming up out of it (Acts 8:38–39). Both examples indicate the use of enough water for full immersion.

Because of the meaning of the word baptize and the example set in Scripture, we practice baptism by immersion.

Practical Guidance

Baptism is not required to receive salvation. However, we strongly encourage everyone who has placed their faith in Christ for eternal life to be baptized as an act of obedience.

Although the Bible does not specify a minimum age for baptism, a person should be mature enough to understand its
meaning and significance.

Those who have already been baptized as believers prior to attending Liberty Pentecostal Church do not need to be
baptized again.

In situations where full immersion is not possible due to physical limitations, an alternative method of baptism may be
used.
